This is a set of experiments, demonstrating an interesting aspect of thallium
chemistry, in combination with different iodine-containing compounds.

Potassium perchlorate is only marginally soluble in cold water, while being
much more soluble in hot water. From perchloric acid solutions, one can easily
precipitate KClO4, almost quantitatively. It is funny to see how a potassium
salt precipitates so quickly and densely.

Dichromate/chromic acid is reduced by malic acid and in this reaction an
intensely colored purple complex of chromium(III) is formed. If the reaction is
performed in the presence of an excess amount of strong non-coordinating acid,
then the reaction proceeds faster, and also a purple complex is formed, but the
color is much less intense.
Without the extra acid, there really is a new complex with chromium(III). This
complex reacts with ammonia, giving a nice green solution.
EXPERIMENT 4

Perchloric acid is very reluctant to reacting with many chemicals. This is
different from what many sites are telling. Perchloric acid only is extremely
reactive when it is anhydrous, the hydrous acid (60 ... 70%) is not that
reactive.

Lead(II) hydroxide is easily converted to lead(II) oxide by simple boiling. The
lead(II) oxide appears as nice glittering gold/yellow crystals.

Hydrogen chloride does not dissolve very well in concentrated perchloric acid.

Chromium metal does not dissolve al all in concentrated nitric acid, not even
when the acid is heated. It does dissolve in concentrated hydrochloric acid and
also in moderately concentrated perchloric acid, but in the latter some heating
is required.
